Mike Kromrey with field trip students

Field Trips at the Watershed Center are no new game to us. Mike started leading them when he was a bright-faced young man and I continue the project today with interns and volunteers that cover the age spectrum. The point is that these field trips, while they are our bread-and-butter here at theWatershed Center, never seem to feel routine. No matter how many I have planned, organized, and lead, my heart still races when i hear the school bus pull up. When spring birds start to sing and mornings are mild, my breath quickens with excitement for the season. Next Tuesday we kick of a string of about 7 weeks of field trips, and i couldn’t feel more excited! The anxiety about organizing every last detail has subsided over the years, but the anticipation has not. Even with all the ducks in a row, you never know quite what to expect when 50 or 100 fifth graders abandon their big yellow ship and flood the front lawn. New questions, new ideas, new faces lighting up.  An owl swoops by. A turkey gobbles in the distance. A frog slips out of the most careful grip of a student eager to show her classmates. The point is that you couldn’t trade me jobs if you wanted to this time of year. I work longer hours, I get less peaceful sleep, and sometimes I wonder if it would be easier to move in out here, but I still get the fix I need to carry on through the whole year when field trips begin. 20130604_123457

Thanks for helping. These field trips are impossible for one person to pull off, or two people, or three people. I have dozens of volunteers working with me and each of you pick up one or two field trips and that makes the difference. As we look to continue increasing our outreach effort, you and your friends will be crucial! Thanks so much for all that you do. See you in the creek!
