Fun in the sun, brats on the bun, and good work was done last Thursday, at the Valley Water Mill Lake Cleanup. Volunteers had the unique opportunity to take a boat out on to the lake, where boat use is normally prohibited. This privileged paddling wasn’t all about fun and games as we gathered many bags of trash (including tires, scrap wood, and rebar) from the water and the shoreline. Outdoor Initiatives, a division of the Springfield-Greene County Parks Board, supplied canoes, kayaks, and even stand-up paddle boards.

More than thirty volunteers provided the sweat and hard work; although it is safe to say that everyone had a great time paddling in the sunshine. The morning concluded with an expertly prepared lunch on the grill provided by Matt Boehner, a Master Naturalist and seasoned Watershed Center volunteer. Thanks to everyone who helped out, and to City Utilities for their help in coordinating this event.
