On May 1st, 2015 the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks was awarded the Our Missouri Waters Collaborative effort for the Sac River Watershed through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The goal of this project is to gather local input and identify water resource priorities through community meetings.

The Sac River Watershed encompasses portions of Cedar, Dade, Lawrence, Greene, Polk, St. Clair, Vernon, Barton, Christian and Hickory counties and includes the towns of Springfield, Republic, Bolivar, Willard, Ash Grove, Greenfield, Stockton, and Walnut Grove. In an effort to engage members from all these areas within the watershed, informational meetings were hosted in different geographic locations throughout the watershed. Community meetings were held on November 17th in Stockton, December 15th in Greenfield and January12th in Willard with a total of 140 meeting participants and 66 completed surveys to collect watershed priorities.

Interested participants from the community meetings have formed a voluntary local watershed advisory committee (WAC) and held their first meeting last night in Greenfield. The survey results helped provide a guide for discussion about watershed problems or needs during the first meeting. There were good discussions and it is wonderful to see a diverse group of local volunteers working towards improving and protecting the Sac River Watershed through this planning effort. The outcome of this process will be the Sac River Healthy Watershed Plan that will help maximize resources and focus watershed priorities over the next five years.
