Visitors to Valley Water Mill Park are hearing squeals of delight and exclamations of wonder as hundreds of third grade students explore the Watershed Center. The students are enrolled in Splash! as part of the Springfield Public Schools’ summer school Explore program. During their first week students studied Sanders Splash4Spring, got their hands wet as they searched for different lake organisms, investigated a model stream, and explored the wetlands area.

Students from ten different elementary schools will be taking weekly field trips to the Watershed Center. Numerous hands-on activities will give them firsthand knowledge about watersheds, water pollution, ecology, and numerous other topics related to their drinking water. Students enrolled in the first session will be visiting the park through June with the second session field trips will occur throughout July.

The Watershed Committee of the Ozarks staff is thrilled to be working with Springfield Public Schools’ summer Explore! program. The field experiences gained by these students will last a lifetime. As one students Splash3exclaimed as she boarded the bus back to school “Best field trip, ever!” Enrollment information for the second session can be found on the district’s website.
