Mission

The Watershed Committee of the Ozarks (WCO) is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to sustain and improve the water resources of Springfield and Greene County through education and effective management of the region’s watersheds.” The Watershed Conservation Corps (WCC) will enact and further this mission through projects and education. Specifically, the mission of the WCC is “hands-on watershed stewardship and improvement.”

Duties and Responsibilities

The Trail Tech 2 will serve as a member on a 4–6-person traveling trails crew working within various wilderness areas of Mark Twain National Forest. Responsibilities include a wide range of diverse tasks, including some management responsibilities, trail maintenance/construction, and invasive plant management, (note that the primary focus will be on trail construction and maintenance). 

Work Schedule 

Firm, 40 hours per week. The typical crew schedule is 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. Schedule dates can vary as they are dependent on the weather and season.  

Location

The “home base” is The Watershed Center at Valley Water Mill in Springfield, MO, but crews will travel and work in the backcountry and wilderness areas within the Mark Twain National Forest. 

 Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or pursuing a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, Resource Management, or related field preferred.

1. Must be 18 years old or older with a valid driver’s license.

2. Must exhibit the ability to work with others as a team.

3. Ability to represent the organization in a positive manner.

4. Ability to hike 3-10 miles daily on uneven, steep terrain carrying up to 45 lbs. 

5. Ability to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions.

6. Must be flexible for varied work hours.

Benefits

 30 Hours of Paid Time Off (PTO) after 120 hours in position, paid federal holidays, networking with federal and other professional organizations. While traveling, housing and food will be provided during the work week.

The Trail Tech 3 – Crew Leader responsibilities include supervising and managing a trails crew of 4-6 members within various wilderness areas of Mark Twain National Forest. Management tasks include daily field operations, crew safety, crew purchases, transporting crew and gear with WCC provided vehicle, as well as maintain excellent communication with the WCC Federal Program Manager. Other duties will be a wide range of diverse tasks including trail maintenance/construction and invasive plant management (note that the primary focus will be on trail maintenance and construction.)

3. Able to work as a team while guiding crew dynamics.

4. Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

5. Ability to represent the organization in a positive manner.

6. Ability to hike 3-10 miles daily on uneven, steep terrain carrying up to 45 lbs.
