Watershed Natives and Springfield artist Kate Baird hosted the Color Sense – Paper Dyeing with Plants Workshop at the Watershed Center on Saturday, October 1st, 2022.
This workshop brought the community together to explore how we look at color in the natural world.
Attendees added splashes of color to paper using natural dyes made from various native or easily accessible plants, including:
- Sumac
- Goldenrod
- Marigold
- Walnut
- Pokeberry
The group had a meaningful conversation about the lifecycle of color as it occurs in nature and while using natural materials. They also explored the impact of variables such as textile and pH level on the dye processes and were offered valuable resources for learning more about this long-standing tradition.
“It was a wonderful time. Thank you for offering this experience!” said attendee Shauna LeAnn Smith. Thank you to those who participated in this workshop; we look forward to holding more. Stay tuned on our website and socials.
